How to Protect Your Skin and Keep it Looking its Best in Winter Versus Summer

Proper skincare can do wonders for both your health and your appearance. When we have hydrated and healthy skin, wrinkles are less apparent and our skin has a healthy, natural glow which automatically gives us a more youthful appearance. Far too many people however commit to one skincare regime for the entire year because they feel as though they should stick with what is working. The fallacy here is that our skin needs different treatments depending on the season and the weather and this is especially true during the winter months when the harsh cold and winds can wreck havoc on our skin. Here is how to alter your skincare program once the winter weather sets in.

Sunscreen
Many people falsely believe that sunscreen is reserved for summer months when the sun is blazing. This is one misconception that needs to be corrected as soon as possible. The sun shines during all months of the year and in fact, the most damaging rays are when it is cloudy. Therefore using sunscreen year round should be the first change you make to your skincare routine.

The sunscreen you apply should be at least 15 SPF in the winter and you may also want to apply one that has additional moisturizers as well. Winds can become more dramatic during the winter months and the added moisturizer will keep the skin hydrated and more protected from the winter elements.

Water
Everyone should drink at least 64 ounces of water per day for glowing and hydrated skin but in the winter months this is more important and you may want to increase that amount by a glass or two. When our skin becomes dehydrated it is far more susceptible to the elements because non-hydrated skin will chaff and become brittle. It is therefore more susceptible to cracking, peeling and will deepen the appearance of wrinkles. By hydrating your skin you will keep it supple and the elasticity will also increase, leaving your skin softer and more pliable.

Humidifiers
The winter air also brings about changes to the inside of your home. Whereas in the warmer months we often open our doors and windows to allow fresh air and moisture in, most people keep their homes closed up in the winter months and the interior of your house can become dry and dusty.

Adding a humidifier to the rooms you spend the most time in, particularly when you are sleeping will incorporate some of that lost moisture back into the air and can work wonders for your skin. You can find inexpensive humidifiers at department stores and your skin will love you for it.

Exfoliation
Part of the reason our skin becomes dry and cracked and loses its youthful look is that the cells within the skin are lacking the nourishment they need to reproduce other healthy cells. At the same time the skin cells we do have become dry and damaged leaving a chaffed and lackluster look to our appearance.

One of the best ways to keep our skin cells healthy and to remove dead skills cells is with an exfoliating treatment which can be purchased for only a few dollars at retail stores. Exfoliatiors should be performed only one time per week and you can actually use them on your entire body. Simply apply them and use the scrubbing pad to remove the layers of damaged, dead skin cells, leaving the healthy ones on the surface.

Moisturizers
Moisturizers should be a staple in any person’s skincare regime but you will need to switch the type you use in the winter versus what you use in the summer. For winter months your skin will need added moisture and hydration and one way to get this is to choose an oil-based moisturizer. Normally with the heat and humidity in the warmer months you want to stay with an oil free moisturizer. However, with the elements such as cold temperatures, wet weather and harsh winds of the winter our skin doesn’t retain the same level of natural oils. The natural oils which help to moisturize the skin need to be replenished to help protect the skin.

Apply these moisturizers at least twice per day; once in the morning and then again before bed.

Scarves
It is also a good idea to wear some scarves especially when the winds are high as it will shield your skin from the elements and offer protection while you are out and about. The less contact the elements have on your skin, the better off it will be and the skincare regime that you have in place will be much more effective.
